Air Jordan 5 history

The Air Jordan 5, designed by Tinker Hatfield, was first introduced in 1990 in four colors. When creating the Jordan 5 concept, Hatfield took Jordan’s attack style into account. The sneaker’s aesthetic and design had to reflect Jordan’s mindset as well as being functional and supporting the feet of some of the world’s greatest sneakers.

The design of the Jordan 5 sneaker was inspired by the aggressive aesthetic of the famous World War II P-51 Mustang fighter. Developed by North American Aviation in 1940, the Mustang helped maintain Allied air superiority during World War II in Europe, Africa and the Pacific, and Mustang pilots claimed to have destroyed more than 4,950 enemy aircraft at a single point.

A variant of the P-51, dubbed “The Shark,” features a shark-tooth motif that runs along the jet’s barrel right next to the propellers. You can clearly see where the inspiration came from in the midsole of the Jordan 5.

The Air Jordan 5 is the trend-setting sneaker in the Air Jordan series. It was the first shoe in the line to have a transparent outsole. previously developed by Tinker Hatfield Marty McFly’s Nike MAG, Transparent molding was applied to the outsole to allow light to pass through. This is where Hatfield got the concept for the Jordan 5’s transparent sole.

V5 was first released in 2000 and then re-released over 2006-2009, 2011-2013, and 2013-2017. “Laney” Vs (named after Jordan’s high school), “Green Bean” Vs, Wolf Gray Vs, and “Raging Bull” Vs are the most popular non-OG versions.
